International Center for Environmental Health and Toxicology (ICEHT)
(formerly, International Center for Environmental and Industrial Toxicology (ICEIT))
The International Center for Environmental and Industrial Toxicology (ICEIT) was established as a specialized center to operate and coordinate academic and research activities in the area of environmental health, toxicology and technology, including biotechnology, to protect the environment and human health. At the same time, the center promotes and develops an awareness of environmental toxicology in all sectors of the population: the government, the private sector and the general public.
In 1990, ICEIT was designated a “UNEP Center of Excellence in Environmental and Industrial Toxicology” by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in recognition of the outstanding activities that it had undertaken.
In 1990, ICEIT was designated a “UNEP Center of Excellence in Environmental and Industrial Toxicology” by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in recognition of the outstanding activities that it had undertaken.
In 2005, as a result of collaboration between CRI and World Health Organization, CRI was designated a WHO Collaborating Center for Capacity Building and Research in Environmental Health Science and Toxicology to undertake activities coordinated primarily by ICEIT. As a consequence, the name ICEIT has now been changed to the International Center for Environmental Health and Toxicology (ICEHT), in line with the center’s broader mission.
In 2013, WHO SEARO has designated CRI to be a Regional Training Center for Chemical Safety in the South-East Asia Region.
The specific goals of the Center, which are in line with CRI’s objectives, are:
- To develop human resources in the area of environmental health, toxicology and technology (including biotechnology).
- To conduct basic and applied research leading to prevention of environmental toxicological problems and protection of human health.
- To serve as a center for international and regional cooperation in technology transfer and human resource development for developing countries, primarily in the Asia and Pacific region.
