By Royal Command of the President of the Chulabhorn Research Institute (CRI), Vice President for International Relations of the CRI Presided over the Opening Ceremony of the Training Project on the Management of Rabies to Communities in Surat Thani Province
On August 24, 2024 at Kaewsamui Resort, Surat Thani Province, by Royal Command of Professor Dr. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol, President of the Chulabhorn Research Institute (CRI), Lieutenant Chawat Arthayukti, Vice President for International Relations of the CRI, presided over the opening ceremony of the Training Project for Knowledge Dissemination and Technology Transfer on the Management of Rabie to Communities, under the strategy of the operation of HRH Princess Chulabhorn’s project on “Disease-free Animals, Safe Humans from Rabies”. The Project aims to promote network engagement in the operation, surveillance, prevention, and control of rabies, as well as systematic and efficient management of animal population in communities.
The training was conducted in collaboration between the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Faculty of Education, Kasetsart University, as well as other relevant agencies, to develop and establish a network to prevent and control rabies in communities through various learning promotion activities, such as academic lectures, a workshop on using applications, demonstrations of first aid procedures, knowledge transfer on rabies using a Q&A game, as well as knowledge on legal provisions related to the prevention and control of rabies. Over 200 representatives of various agencies attended the training.
Surat Thani Province is a target area for HRH Princess Chulabhorn’s project on “Disease-free Animals, Safe Humans from Rabies”, aiming to enable local residents to efficiently manage dog issues and rabies. Surat Thani Province reportedly has a dog and cat population of 59,455, with 5,140 sterilized, and 39,001 vaccinated against rabies. In addition, the Province regularly organizes activities to campaign and promote the prevention of the spread of rabies, raising people’s awareness for responsible pet care and management, without letting animals become communities’ burden, and equipping people with proper methods to prevent and control rabies for the safety of both people and animals.
Professor Dr. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol recognizes the seriousness of rabies, which is a life-threatening zoonotic disease. Her Royal Highness has tirelessly taken a leading role in the drive of HRH Princess Chulabhorn’s project on “Disease-free Animals, Safe Humans from Rabies”. This Project aligns with the goal of the World Health Organization to eradicate rabies around the world by 2030, paving the way for Thailand to become a hub for sustainably addressing the rabies issues in Asia.
