Professor Dr. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol, President of the Chulabhorn Research Institute, is deeply concerned with the health issues of the Thai people, who form a vital foundation for sustainable national development.  Her Royal Highness directed the Royal Medical Unit, under the banner of the Princess Mother’s Medical Volunteer Foundation (PMMV) and the Chulabhorn Veterinary Volunteer Unit, to campaign for the prevention and control of the spread of rabies in the north, stationing at Tak Provincial Administrative Organization and the International Convention and Exhibition Centre Commemorating His Majesty’s 7th Cycle Birthday Anniversary, in Tak and Chiang Mai Provinces respectively, from February 8-10, 2023.

During this mission, under Her Royal Highness’s directives, the PMMV in Tak and Chiang Mai Provinces provided numerous forms of vital medical and public health services, attending to people from all walks of life, offering treatment for general diseases, health consultations, traditional Thai medicine, and dentistry. Common health issues in these two Provinces included muscular, cardiovascular, and respiratory diseases.

Moreover, veterinarians from the Chulabhorn Veterinary Volunteer Unit collaborated with their counterparts from the Provincial Livestock Offices in the local areas, offering sterilization and rabies vaccination services, promoting responsible pet ownership, and ensuring effective surveillance, prevention, and control of rabies.

The Chulabhorn Veterinary Volunteer Unit also organized activities to educate pet owners and livestock volunteers on rabies, empowering them to share knowledge on the dangers and proper prevention of rabies within their communities.

At the same time, Her Royal Highness distributed rabies vaccines to be used for vaccinating both owned and stray animals in Tak and Chiang Mai Provinces aiming to enhance efficient prevention efforts and reduce risk of rabies transmission, a serious zoonotic disease.

Afterwards, Her Royal Highness personally administered rabies vaccinations to peoples pets, performed veterinary anesthesia, together with the team of the Chulabhorn Veterinary Volunteer Unit, for sterilization of dogs and treatment of other diseases, such as skin tumors and uterine infections. Sterilization not only reduces the number of animals that could be carriers of rabies but also lowers the risk of reproductive diseases, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia, testicular cancer, uterine infection, and breast cancer, among others.

On this occasion, Her Royal Highness led the members of the PMMV and the Chulabhorn Veterinary Volunteer Unit in singing the song “Ruk Kun Wai Therd” (Let Us Love Each Other) and delivered an address to promote love and unity in the country. An excerpt from Her address is as follows, “…I put my faith in all of you. With the tragic news related to amphetamines and narcotics, addicts lose their senses and attack their parents and siblings. I believe that all of us present here love one another and are ready to solve problems together…If all of us join hands, I am confident that our country will prosper and problems will be eliminated…”
