With the compassion and commitment of Professor Dr. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol, President of the Chulabhorn Research Institute, to the good health of the Thais and their pets, as well as stray animals, Her Royal Highness takes a leading role in driving the HRH’s initiated project on “Disease-free Animals, Safe Humans from Rabies” with the intention of rapidly eliminating rabies from Thailand. Her Royal Highness dispatches HRH Princess Chulabhorn’s Veterinary Volunteer Unit to campaign for the prevention of rabies in regions across the country, with importance placed on raising awareness and continuous training for the prevention of rabies to representatives in the local areas so that they can transfer the proper knowledge to their communities.  Her Royal Highness graciously assigned Dr. Thakur Phanit, Vice President for International Relations, Chulabhorn Research Institute, to preside over the opening ceremony of the Project on Integrated Training for Knowledge Dissemination and Technology Transfer on the Management of Rabies to Communities, at Maneechan Resort Hotel, Mueang Chanthaburi District, Chanthaburi Province on April 20, 2024.

The activities were held through the cooperation between the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Faculty of Education, Kasetsart University, and in collaboration with relevant agencies to exchange knowledge on animal health, human health, and efficient management of animals in communities.  The activities included lectures to provide academic knowledge and workshops on the use of applications to prevent rabies in schools and communities, with approximately 150 participants, comprising livestock officials, health education teachers, village health volunteers, public health officials from local administrative organizations, and community representatives.  The training results would greatly benefit the participants.  Apart from the exchange of academic knowledge, a network was also established for future cooperation among agencies relevant to the prevention of rabies.

Chanthaburi Province is a target area for the operation of HRH Princess Chulabhorn’s project on “Disease-free Animals, Safe Humans from Rabies”.  According to a report, the dog and cat population totals 163,216, of which 1,657 are already sterilized, with 160,997 doses of vaccination against rabies administered, and the Training Project on Personnel Potential Development in the Field of Rabies conducted with 67 participants.  Moreover, there are two shelters for stray dogs and cats.  The first shelter is operated by the private sector at Tha Mai Subdistrict, Tha Mai District, and the second one is operated by the public sector at Stray Dog Shelter, Pak Nam Laem Sing Subdistrict Municipality.

The activities contribute to the progress of the operation of HRH Princess Chulabhorn’s project on “Disease-free Animals, Safe Humans from Rabies”.  Her Royal Highness has laid down the foundation for promoting good health of people and their pets, as well as stray animals, through the campaigns for the comprehensive prevention and control of the spread of rabies to ensure that humans and animals can live together safely and sustainably.
