On March 16, 2024, by Royal Command of Professor Dr. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol, President of the Chulabhorn Research Institute, Mr. Piamsak Milintachinda, Vice President for International Relations, Chulabhorn Research Institute, presided over the opening ceremony of the Project on Integrated Training for Knowledge Dissemination and Technology Transfer on the Management of Rabies to Communities, at Navela Hotel, Mueang Ratchaburi District, Ratchaburi Province. The objective was to exchange academic knowledge and practical experience through various activities such as lectures to provide academic knowledge and workshops on the use of applications to prevent rabies in schools and communities. These activities also encompassed learning promotion activities with three knowledge bases, namely 1) demonstrations of first aid for bites, scratches, and wounds licked by infected dogs; 2) knowledge transfer on rabies using a game-based Q&A competition; 3) legal knowledge on the prevention and control of rabies through the use of IT system EDURA, which would greatly benefit the personnel potential development within the network of the participants of the Training Project this time. Approximately 180 participants attended, comprising livestock officials, health education teachers, village health volunteers, public health officials from local administrative organizations, and community representatives. They are a crucial mechanism to rally social forces towards the successful building of rabies-free communities and effectively driving HRH Princess Chulabhorn’s project on “Disease-free Animals, Safe Humans from Rabies”.
Ratchaburi Province is a target area for the operation of the Training Project. The dog and cat population totals 206,673, with 203,128 vaccinated and 5,118 sterilized. Trainings are also held to provide knowledge on rabies to 317 livestock volunteers. For the fiscal year 2024, target areas have been determined to achieve rabies-free districts in Damnoen Saduak District, Suan Phueng District, and Wat Phleng District.
These activities mark yet another success in implementing major strategies for the concrete surveillance, prevention, and control of rabies, fulfilling the intention of Professor Dr. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol who has laid down the foundation for promoting good health of people and animals through campaigns for the rapid elimination of rabies from Thailand.
