Royal Dedication in Medicine and Public Health to All Thais
Professor Dr. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol recognizes the importance of the care of health and hygiene for the Thai people to enjoy a higher quality of life and better livelihoods. Her Royal Highness is strongly committed to providing assistance in the form of standard medicine, nursing, and public health to all the Thais, ensuring they are inclusively and equally free from diseases. Since His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great graciously appointed Her Royal Highness as Honorary President of the Princess Mother’s Medical Volunteer Foundation (PMMV) in 2009, Her Royal Highness has embraced and continued the commitments of Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra, or the Princess Mother, known as the “Mother of Thai Public Health”, and the commitments of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra, visiting and following up on the work of the Princess Mother’s Medical Volunteer Units across the country.
At the beginning of 2024, the needy people of northeast Thailand witnessed the benevolence of Her Royal Highness as she personally visited to perform medical and public health duties. This enabled people to have access to quality medical treatment, disease prevention, and health rehabilitation under the operation of the Princess Mother’s Medical Volunteer Units in Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, and Ubon Ratchathani Provinces in January 9-12, 2024.
Upon arrival, Her Royal Highness graciously gave doctors the opportunity to bring their patients to have audiences with her. The patients were found to be affected by serious chronic diseases such as lung cancer, leukemia and lymphadenitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, scoliosis, and heart valve regurgitation. Her Royal Highness closely conversed with each patient with great concern and interest, and jointly diagnosed them with the medical team to seek appropriate treatments. Her Royal Highness showed compassion by taking all the patients who had audiences with her under her patronage so that they would receive the most efficient treatment and provided them with grants from the Chulabhorn Foundation for necessary expenses for their further treatment. The Chulabhorn Foundation is an agency initiated by Her Royal Highness to carry out various public activities to assist the needy and underprivileged nationwide, as well as promote the study and research in science, medicine, and public health, benefiting the country overall.
During each visit to the Princess Mother’s Medical Volunteer Unit, Her Royal Highness paid attention to local children and young people, giving them opportunities to upgrade their learning skills and exercise their creativity to become good citizens for the future of the country. Her Royal Highness distributed school supplies and learning tools that would help enhance the children’s learning process and development in all aspects, such as stationery, coloring books, and toys to pupils in kindergartens and the first year of primary education in the local schools.
On this occasion, Her Royal Highness presented committee and sub-committee emblems to the representatives of the PMMV committee and sub-committee in each province, and also presented the PMMV emblems, brooches inscribed with the Royal Appellation S.V., and trophies to the volunteers. All recipients were filled with deep gratitude for the great moral support in their efforts to work with their public mindedness, responsibility, and dedication for the public good.
Her Royal Highness then led the PMMV members in singing her own composition “One Drop of Blood”, and delivered an address on the guidelines for conduct and performing their duties with caution and awareness for the maximum benefit of the public and the country. An excerpt of the address of Her Royal Highness given during the visit to the PMMV Yasothon on January 9, 2024 at Loeng Nok Tha School, Loeng Nok Tha District, Yasothon Province is as follows… “…Whether veterinarian or doctor, it is our duty to save lives or alleviate the sufferings of our patients. I urge everyone to work with all your heart…We must impartially help patients, doing good deeds without expecting anything in return …I believe that the PMMV will succeed …You must work to help the people…”
During her visits to the PMMV Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, and Ubon Ratchathani, Her Royal Highness graciously assigned the medical team from Chulabhorn Hospital to work with provincial and local hospitals in each area such as Yasothon Hospital, Loeng Nok Tha Hospital, Phana Hospital, Pathumratchwongsa Hospital, Khueang Nai Hospital, Provincial Public Health Offices, and Local Public Health Offices. They provided free medical check-ups and treatment of general diseases, dentistry services for oral examination, Thai traditional medicine, and breast cancer screening. A total of 626 patients received treatment, with common health problems including musculoskeletal and joint diseases, gastrointestinal tract diseases, and neurological disorders, etc.
Her Royal Highness has long performed continuous and tireless royal duties in medicine and public health to enhance the quality of life for the sick and underprivileged across Thailand, with the conviction to follow the footsteps of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great, and always keeping in mind His Majesty’s words “To best take care of the health of the people…to the utmost of your ability”. All this has indeed been motivating Her Royal Highness to perform numerous royal duties for the benefit and happiness of the country and the Thai people.
